Background

We have taken current research in which we are engaged as a starting point for this project. Specifically, we are using a computational model of the natural system cells in the human body as our basis for exploring what it means to simulate the real world in a computational environment.

The ability of stem cells to maintain and re-populate different types of functional cells in the body after injury or disease has made their study arguably the biggest growth area in medical science in the last 5 years or so. However, experimental research has been thwarted for several reasons and there is a growing awareness amongst the stem cell community that formal and computational approaches are essential for the advancement of strategies to manipulate stem cells or cells produced by stem cells for therapeutic applications. Mathematical models and computer simulations of stem cells can provide a means to pose and validate non-intuitive theories of stem cell mechanisms.
